The community is invited to this important and compelling community roundtable discussion with the famous Dr. Jose Angel Gutierrez on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 6PM. The Texas Lutheran University Center for Mexican American Studies in partnership with Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin are hosting this roundtable on the “Historical legacy of Crystal City” at Teatro’s Cultural Arts Center 921 W. New Braunfels St. Seguin, TX 78155 featuring Dr. Jose Angel Gutierrez. Dr. Gutierrez was a central figure in challenging the discriminatory school board practices in Crystal City, Texas in the 1970s. The events at Crystal City are noted as one of the fundamental movements that initiated the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement in Texas. He was one of the founders of the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO) one of the first student activist groups of the inception of the Chicano movement.
