Teatro is excited to introduce the second installment of our Latino Poetry Literary Series. Teatro was awarded a grant from the Library of America and Humanities Texas to produce a three-part series of poetry programming centered around the newly released, Latino Poetry, The Library of America Anthology. For nearly five centuries, the rich tapestry of Latino poetry has been woven from a wealth of languages and cultures—a “tremendous continental MIXTURAO,” in the words of the poet Tato Laviera.
Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin in partnership with the Seguin Public Library is bringing to the Seguin and surrounding communities, ages 12-99 a poetry writing workshop focused on humanities themes: Ancestry & Identity, Language, Voice & Resistance, First & Second Homes, Family & Community, Music & Performance, and Labor from the Latino Poetry, The Library of America Anthology. Leading the workshop will be by Bianca Alyssa Powell-Perez, who holds her Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from Texas State University, and she is a Texas State University Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the MFA in Creative Writing Program. Mrs. Powell-Perez will read numerous poems from the anthology and/or show poetry readings from the video archive as a way to set the tone of the poetry workshop. She will provide insight into all humanities themes while encouraging participants to reflect upon their lives and begin to write poetry. Bianca will spend time visiting with participants and offer advice as they write. Towards the end of workshop participants will be encouraged to take part in a poetry sharing circle where they will have the opportunity to share their poem or share about something they learned in the workshop. This event is a face-to-face event. A light lunch will be served (while supplies last) to all participants and this event is being held at the Seguin Public Library located at 313 W Nolte Street Seguin, Tx 12PM-2PM in the Community Meeting Room.
The entire community is invited to join us for this event, and we look forward to seeing everyone!
